Talk before you take the phone

29 September 2026

A raid on the device gets you a snapshot and a child who hides the next app better. Start with a conversation that can happen more than once.

The instinct, when you are worried, is to pick up the phone and start opening things. Sometimes you will need to look. If the first move is always a search, children learn one lesson: hide it better. Vault apps exist because that lesson got around.

Start with a specific question, not a speech. "Who can message you on this?" is better than "Are you being safe online?", which almost nobody can answer honestly. Sit beside them. Let them hold the phone. Ask them to show you the part they like before the part you are worried about. You will learn the real name of the app, the friend list, and the mood around it.

A useful house rule has three lines. People you have actually met can be in private chats. Strangers do not get the camera, the address, or the school. If something feels wrong, telling you is the win, even if a rule was already broken. Say that last line out loud. Children stay quiet when they think the confession will cost them the phone and the relationship.

You can still set limits. Time, bedrooms, and app-store passwords are ordinary parenting, not surveillance. Explain the limit in the same conversation as the reason. "Discord stays off until we have looked at the servers together" is a decision. "Because I said so" ends the conversation you will need next month, when the app has changed.

If you do look through a device, say that you are going to, and say what would make you look again. Secret searches of a teenager's phone can find something important and still wreck the chance they will come to you next time. With a younger child, more direct supervision is appropriate. Match the check to the age.

End the conversation with one next step, not ten. Turn a setting off together. Remove one app. Agree to watch the feed on Sunday. Then stop. A short talk you can repeat will do more than one perfect lecture.
